RECENT WORKS, COLLABORATIONS AND REMIXES BY WATCH TV
Just at around the turn of this century HiTop released it´s first CD. It was by an innovating dj and producer named Rubén "Watch TV" García, whose name attempts to unravel the irony of today´s most powerful form of mass media: television. Bored of trends and the same-old-same-old, he turned to his amigos, other DJs from Madrid, to collaborate on a new record he was putting together. From his makeshift studio in the back of Ama Records, he invited these DJs, specialists in funk, soul, electro, drum and bass, dub, hip hop, etc to meld with his distinctive downbeat style. Rubén scheduled each one in to bring their particular styles and samples, and many an afternoon was spent talking about music (and more importantly, for most), making it for the first time. These sunny afternoon sessions were completed, and two 12"s and a CD were released under the name "The After School Special." The reactions were very positive both in Spain and out, leaving people curious about this multifaceted producer and his intricate beatmaking. The word started to spread, and songs got picked up for compilations, most notably El Gran Lapofsky´s "Recess" which appeared on "Future Sounds of Jazz" Vol.7 on Compost Records. Well, without much further ado, the second volume is ready for your listening pleasure! This time around Watch TV has enlisted collaborations of old partners, like Mondomo, El Gran Lapofsky, and Nava, and shuffled up new ones such as Headtric (not to mention Argentine sensation Axel Krygier on flute, and Alberto "Todoacien" Santos on guitar). You will also find Watch TV´s sought-after remixes for Norway's Beady Belle, Argentina´s Axel Krygier, and New York´s El Gran Lapofsky. For those of you who saw his funked up DJ set at Sonar 2002, this CD offers you many of those tracks (the others can be found on Volume 1). There´s even a Video Track to check out on your computer courtesy of Oli Schneider of Headtric (www.royalfamily-designlabor.de). So far these tunes have been played by prestigious DJs like Mr Scruff, Rainer Truby, John Peel, Nicola Conte, Chris Coco, Soul Patrol, Quantic, Alex Dallas, Funky Lowlives, Monte Larue, Tom Wieland, and more... Here is what some people are sayin´ about the 12" samplers: "Wonderful" - DJ Morpheus (Crammed/Radio Nova) Brussels. "Love all 3 tracks"- Adam Regan (Different Drummer/Leftfoot Recordings) Birmingham. "Mumbo Jumbo by El Gran Lapofsky is by far the best downtempo 12" as of lately with steel drum samples, flute & a funky bassline- but it´s all about that beat!" - Nickodemus (Turntables on the Hudson/Rhythm Love) New York City. "Nice slice of hip hop influenced funkiness business going on." -Darren Laws (Grand Central) Manchester " Killer - all tracks!!!!!!" - DJ Makossa (FM4 Radio) Vienna. |
