Straight from Madrid, Watch TV is back at it with more After School Sessions. It´s been an interesting year for the man otherwise known as Rubén García, between DJing, producing new tracks, and even dropping a remix for Norway´s Beady Belle for Universal Spain. This time around Watch TV has enlisted collaborations of old partners, like El Gran Lapofsky, Mondomo, and Nava, and shuffled up new ones such as Headtric. For those of you who have heard The After School Special Volume 1, the idea remains the same, Watch TV at the controls and doing ALL of the programming, and some of Spain´s hottest underground Djs bringing the style and the samples to create that After School Sound. This 12" features Watch TV´s new collaborations with Nava, El Gran Lapofsky, and Headtric. "Badulaque" by Nava kicks things off with a storming latin track, somewhere between house and breaks. José "Nava" Navarrete is one of the founders of the renonwned shop Ama Records as well as one of the original pioneers of new beats in Madrid, and many will remember the underground bomb "El Chalao" from The After School Special Vol.1. Next up is "Brushfire", the fantastic debut from Headtric - a deep jamaican jazz journey. Headtric is a group of 3 friends from Cologne, Germany, made up of Jojo Altevogt (bass, guitar), Ana Motjer (vocals, bass) and Oliver Schneider (guitar, vocals). When Jojo was one of the heads of Groove Attack, Ana and Oli were working on their design project, "Royal Family". (Check the art at www.royalfamily-designlabor.de) Common influences such as punk rock, disco, and latin brought them together, as well as an appreciation for all things esthetic. Ana was even a member of The Thing of Venus, a girl-glitter-trash combo from Cologne. They also do their own videos, and "Another Dark Alley Scenario", Headtric´s second single, is coming soon. Make sure to see it. New York City´s own El Gran Lapofsky (HiTop director David Lapof) is back with "Mumbo Jumbo", the follow up to "Recess" (FSOJ 7) that will entice all beats lovers. Exotix, taut hip hop rhythms and deep space are the basis of this almost 9-minute instrumental jam. Featured on both "Badulaque" and "Mumbo Jumbo" is Argentine fenomenon Axel Krygier on flute, who adds some higher heights to the tracks. His debut album "Echale Semilla" came out last year and he is embarking on a European tour this summer. The duke of mellow, Alberto Santos, lent his guitarwork on these songs as well. Fire it up!! |
