Casbah 73´s first 12”, "The Way I Am" (HITOP012) has been turning heads and charting heavily since it’s release in Summer of 2003. Its funked-out disco vibe received the support of DJs across the globe including Gilles Peterson, Richard Dorfmeister, Nicola Conte, Mad Mats, and many others! The limited pressing has left people hungry for more. So here you go - MORE!! The Madrid-based artist and DJ known to many as Oli Stewart comes correct with 2 new gems. On this 12” he delves further into disco territory, while also showing his diversity and skill as a producer and musician. Casbah 73 starts to shape a signature sound with his unique mix of dope samples and live instrumentation, most of which- bass, keyboards, guitar etc are played by Oli himself. "Cabo Verde Strut" gets those soul coals hot again as a tripped out intro segués into a bumpin’ disco groove. The bass drops - add the handclaps, afro horns, driving piano and prepare for take off! Head for the skies but hold onto your rocket until the vocal scats and raw analog buildup on the moog kick in... WOW! Everybody’s dancin!! Flip and discover "Strollin" - a heavenly mellow tune featuring beautifully languid female vocals and acoustic afro rhythms with warm rhodes, quirky trumpet & vibes all giving this sweet song a unique and naive feel. This daydreamer of a ditty is bound for the downbeat hall of fame!! Casbah 73 comes correct with another
fine 12” here. "Cabo Verde Strut(1)" sounds like the
soundtrack for a sweaty car chase thru Sao Paolo; dirty and raw. Brazilian
vocal samples, congos, funky guitar and piano samples keep this one
going. In addition there are some nice spacey disco effects for build
up purposes. The flip side "Strollin(2)" chills out the mood
a bit with some nice female vocal samples and harmonies. The track glides
along with a mid tempo bossa sounding beat and has a very interesting
breakdown at the end, before kicking back in the smooth lyrics. Keep
your eyes on this Spanish label HiTop because they are continually releasing
quality tracks, and not afraid to try a new sound. -SABO (Turntable
Lab, NYC) |
